I decided to give democracytv a try as my podcast client. I found that it has several nice features like being able to set when a downloaded podcast will be automatically deleted. It has a lot nicer gui than gpodder. I wish that it gave me a choice on the media player, but it's internal media player works very well.

I have tried several podcast receiver programs over the past week including kitty, ipodder, jpodder, podracer, and demoracytv. They all worked ok but I was not comfortable with them. One thing I wanted was to control what media player was used for play back, and each of these programs had some limitation in this regard. I finally tried gpodder and it works just the way I want. It seems very stable and is intuitive (i.e. it is easy to figure out how to use it). Gpodder has all the features I want.
