Windows vs Linux

I have noticed that as time goes by (2 - 3 years), one needs to upgrade their Windows system (operating system and hardware) because of the need for more powerful cpu, more memory, etc. The same thing does not seem to happen on the Linux side. A Linux system seems to stay usefull for a lot longer period of time than a Windows system.

Interesting point about Linux based systems staying useful longer. I should think this would be a good argument to influence many home PC users. Of course the market would still be limited to those folks who don't care about running software (mostly commercial games I bet) that is not available on Linux. Still as I think about adult friends of mine, in many cases this would be an influencer in their buying decision if only they knew they had an easy choice.

While I am rattling on about how to capture a "retail" market, the other key selling point is probably the lower incidence of virus attacks and similar issues in the Linux world.

So is anybody out there promoting Linux to the mass market based on these ideas yet? - Kevin S.
